I did a lab a while ago using the Benedict’s Test on a number of different carbohydates. I found that the glucose gave the characteristic brick red colour but other sugars gave green, yellow and orange colours. The Benedict’s test is for reducing sugars and all the sugars that I tested except sucrose were reducing sugars. So does anyone know the reason for the differences in colour? …..The benedict’s reagent usaully changes from blue to green to orange to red with glucose but with the other sugars the red colour was never obtained.
