I’ve been reading up on something called "Haldane’s Dilemma". One topic that comes up is the Cost of Substitution.

Can anyone explain "Cost of Substitution" in layman’s terms?

In laymen terms, when evolution switches gears (major environmental change) large portion of population will die. Original argument was that calculated loss in population is such a case disproves evolution. However, a lot of assumptions were made incorrectly in that argument, thus, making it invalid.
