In E. coli, It takes 40 min to replicate the entire
      chromosome
It requires 20 min between the DNA
      replication and cell division.

How can the generation time in E.coli is 20 min?

Not all E. coli strains replicate at 20mins. Lab strains that have been passed too many times or strains like DH5a that are fairly stripped down will have shorter generation times. Or so I’ve heard…. 8)

Well lab strains might have lost some of their genome (K12 the reference lab strain has a genome about 20% smaller than O17:h7 a pathogen) but both those numbers are true for a laboratory starin.

      So, Hint:

The first division will take 40 minutes, the next one will only take 20 minutes.

for the answer refer book " molecular genetics of bacteria 4th edition by jeremy dale and simon park" page no 16-19.
