Hello kind folks, I have a question about fermentation.
I do know that in plants, alcoholic or ethanol formation occurs when oxygen is not available. Are there any plants that produce ATP using this process naturally, or does this only occur when we physically starve them (so to speak) of oxygen, by, for example placing them in a box? So through human intervention or something.
Am I correct In thinking that fermentation is kind of a last-ditch effort to produce energy?

Unless I’m totally mistaken, plants do not perform ethanol fermentation. That’s mostly yeast business, though some bacteria do it, too.
In some cases ethanol or other alcohols can form in plants, but that has nothing to do with energy metabolism as far as I know.
