Biology is more understanding than memorising. Sure, it is almost impossible if you want to learn it mechanically, but it is really fun and challenging if you understand it and ask yourself: “How does this happen?”
But it is your choise to study for it or not

You will probably collide with some things which you they will ask you o learn by heart, like anatomy and biosystematics. Heck, i don’t even like those. But physiology, genetics, cell bio, microbiology etc are super fun.
For example, did you know that if you cross a special race of white chicken with black ones you get Andaluzia chickens, which are blue?(yes, blue!) ๐Ÿ˜€

      quote :

wat do u like in amoeba?

Hmm…lets see. For one thing they are easy to photograph because they move so slow. ๐Ÿ˜† Amoebas can move, capture, digest, and assimilate complex foods, egest indigestable residues, respire, produce excretions and secretions, respond to stimuli of diverse kinds either in their internal or external evironment. They can grow and reproduce themselves in kind and they can perform all the essential animal activities showing physiological specialization in different processes without having many structurally different parts to perform those processes. The list can go on about all the things that ameba are capable of doing.

Besides, they make wonderful pets. They are easy to take care of, eat very little, well sort of, they are good with children and they don’t bark at night. Now aren’t they wonderful! ๐Ÿ˜€

I think I understood it; the best way to improve yourself is to constantly challenge yourself, right? That’s a pretty cool philosophy. I find life gets boring without any challenges. Just don’t take it to the extreme, like jumping off a twenty-story building to challenge yourself to fly . . . ๐Ÿ˜†

I used to be Wiccan. I’m Catholic now, but I never lost the fascination I had for Wicca. Mainly it amazes me how a belief system could stand the test of time for so long. I feel a similar respect for Judaism and Eastern Orthodox Christianity, and even Catholicism to an extent. I guess every religion has something to offer to everyone.

Not what you would call magic. I personally consider Wiccan magic to be more or less the same thing as Christian sacraments. In both, the supernatural/divine is called upon to do something for humans that we lowly mortals would be unable to do ourselves. For example, if we’re ill, you might do a healing spell, whereas I might rely on the sacrament of Annointing of the Sick. You call what you do magic, and I call what I do prayer, but they’re both more or less the same thing.

I hate politics as well. In fact I think one of the biggest problems with the U.S. and our politics is that we don’t try very hard to improve the environment. Global Warming is everywhere and we don’t seem to care. I went to Mexico (Cancun) and Italy and both are very focused on Conservation. Especially in Cancun. It was such a nice environment. I’m sure alot of other countries are the same way.

I highly agree, bearhug. The trouble is that most US politicians are only concerned with getting themselves re-elected. The only way to get into office in the first place is to be part of a political party, and then to get re-elected you have to do what your party wants to do, and that usually involves helping the party more than the country or the environment. This country would be so much better if we didn’t have political parties. I hate our government.

Mmmm… I’m studying Fundamental Biology (Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology and that kind of subjects). I study at University of Leรณn (in the Faculty of Biological Sciences). People say that University of Leรณn has one of the best Faculties of Biological Sciences of Spain, so I’m happy because I entered here.

Well Im currently concentrating on my undergraduate studies to acquire a B.S. in Biology. I chose developmental as it pertains directly to my concentration of study. I’m currently enrolled at CSUSB–California State University San Bernardino Mainly due to the fact that their Biology department is getting a complete renovation, and is placing major funding in their science departments, but was enrolled in CSUF, California State University Fullerton last term; we are allowed to freely exchange universities within our system.

My Concentration is cytometry and am currently in my 2nd year. I aspire to become a research scientist or should the opportunity lend itself I’ll further my education to acquire a M.S. in developmental Biology.

I have only been to Spain as a child to visit relatives and would love to go back; the woman are insanely hot, French/Portagese/Spanish mixes! My family was located in Costa Blanca. I was thinking of taking the whole student abroad thing, but I would just rather visit their and live their when I retire. Let me crash at your place! Ha. I have yet to meet anyone who is of actual Spanish decent (directly, not indirectly) everyone here in California is Mexican, or Porto Rican, South American etc… I really want to go back.

O.K. Good luck in your studies (I wish you the best). Of course that if you return someday to Spain, I’ll let you crash at my place, he he he! ;). Sure that your relatives miss you much ;).

As you said as in California, in some cities of Spain there are many South Americans (the most of them are people from stupid gangs as ‘Latin Kings’, etc who only come to Spain to rob. I hate this kind of people :S).

Yeah I could "speak" English pretty good here, but I don’t think my "real speaking" would be this good. I might do a good oral presentation, but not for daily conversation, because most of my vocabulary is in biological/scientific terms ๐Ÿ˜ณ ๐Ÿ˜ณ I know I have to do more practice by speaking with natives but I always experience "losing words" when I face them ๐Ÿ˜ณ ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Boston is the Capital. California is on the West Coast 3000 miles from me.
Pennsylvania is about a 6 hour drive

I am on the East Coast. , "Massachusetts lies between the parallels of 41 degrees 10′ and 42 degrees 53′ north latitude and between 69 degrees 57′ and 73 degrees 30′ west longitude. It has a shoreline of approximately 1,980 miles on the Atlantic Ocean, Massachusetts Bay, and Buzzards Bay. The state is 190 miles, east-west, and 110 miles, north- south, at its widest parts. The northern, or New Hampshire-Vermont border, runs almost due east and west for 135 miles; the western, or New York boundary, is 49 miles long. On the south, Massachusetts borders Connecticut for 91 miles and Rhode Island for 65 miles"

Um…I’m a Biology major but I plan on specializing in Marine Biology when I go to grad school. I also do research with my professor in the field of Aquatic Ecology, Community Ecology and Resource Management. I’m obsessed with biology at the ecological perspective. ๐Ÿ˜›

..* that’s Malita, Mindanao, Philippinas for the geographicaly challenged

..**read eco-disaster but shhh, quietly mm ?

      ..and the project ?

..part 1 ..note and identify all the existing flora fauna, and generally crawly, swimmy or flyingy thingies in the Malita to Demoloc valley, especially the boring grass types ‘n’ stuff..

..part 2,.. using local schools do a full eco-count, using simple I-Spy books created in part 1, and find a university to process this stuff, with helpful comments..

..part 3..the easy bit, build an equatorial rainforest at the head of the valley to act as a life-boat?-rest-room? for the small and boring bits that can’t fly the enormous distances between the two existing but shrinking national parks..

..yes, you will be credited on the website that’l go with this, and in any books

Blanket posting means posting the same message again and again to boost yourรผ post count. We only did it some time in the "Last person to reply wins" Thread.

No, blanket posting is where you post in every topic, constantly, so it’s like you write a blanket of posts that covers all the topics.

lol, I pretty much just made that up.

      Humm…Okay…

I just stumbled upon this forum and it is something that I was looking for. I was surprised the lack of similar forums in the net, especially one’s from my own country…well kind of.

I’m a first year student of biology, and I’ve been looking for a community of people interested in biology I could relate to and with whom I could exchange ideas and to have, or at least follow discussions about biology.

I’ve been a little frustrated about the lack of discourse with other biology students on the most interesting field of science, and I’ve wondered why there doesn’t seem to be this environment of open exchange of thoughts. Luckily I’ve found this place.

      What else…

      I’m a male.
      I’m 25.
I’ve done a major U-turn in starting to study biology. Reading a little Dawkins helped a lot…

    • #70142

      Participant

Ha! Actually there are some differences between them, some of them are:
      – Skin surface, frog’s is smoother and moist while toad’s is rough (since the presence of tubercles) and dry.
      – Body shape, frog’s is slimmer than chubby toad.
      – Teeth, frog doesn’t have teeth in "V" bone while toad doesn’t
      – Bone shape, frog’s is slender than toad’s
      – The presence of parotoid glands on toad
      – Habitat, frog prefers watery place like ponds, rivers, etc. while toad is somewhere drier.
      – Frog can swim well, toad cannot.
      – Eggs, frog’s are scattered, toad’s are arranged in string.
      – Food preference.

      usw.

You’re right; the world would be a better place without it. But the sad fact is that some people are violent, and sometimes the only way to counter that is to fight fire with fire.

I am an ex-Marine, for example, and I saw combat in Afghanistan. My fellow Marines and I fought and killed terrorists that were not above killing innocent children simply because they thought it would get them into heaven. You can’t reason with people like that.

I wasn’t planning on entering the military either, but the attack on the World Trade Center changed my mind. I figured if there’s people out there who want to kill me just because of my religion or my nationality, then I’m at least going to get a good shot at them first, and I thought that maybe in the process I could keep my loved ones safe.

The "age" thing–sounds like in the 100 years.

      Hi everybody!
My father gave me his X chromosome.
      I’m from Manila.
I finished undergraduate in biology and maybe take masteral in microbiology or ecology, or whatever, still other fields in biology get my interests–I’ll think very well for it.
I have been just eager to check this site now and then. I was so busy the last year.
One replied that I’m the most confusing person he encountered and that’s saying something. (When I posted topic on cycling universe) is that so? ๐Ÿ™„ Though some of my topics seem not to be useful (I admit that made me ) but that’s ok; I feel relaxed as I go here, after a very long tiring working day. Typically chinese. I does not help the survival of endangered species. It is supposed to be very healthy and so on, so it is expensive. The fin is just boiled in the broth, and it is skinned before cooking. Smells very fishy to me, and since I don’t like fish, I am not inclined to taste. And the whole endangered species makes it even less likely.

Truth ๐Ÿ™„ I was visiting family in japan when I had that soup at one of the fancier Chinese restaraunts. The most fun places to eat in japan I think are the normal sushi bars with the plates on the conveyer belt. That or the cheapo borderline shack type restaraunts in the alleys that the businessmen go to when they’re out of work to eat and drink. Yakitori is awesome =)

Each person can interpret it differently..

My interpretation is that we should never discriminate people for what they look or because of their age, just because someone is young it does not have to mean that the person is childish.

First impressions are not always right.. you never know what to expect , for good and for bad, so.. even we have formed a idea about someone, you should be prudent.

Hope you can understand my point of view

Hello everyone. I am Trevor Lawrence. I am just now working on my project. I worked on it yesterday, and I got a lot done. But I have a lot still to do. I live in SE Tennesee, USA. It is beautiful country here amid the Appalachian Mountain chain. We are close to the Great Smokey Mountains, with Gatlinburg as its resort village.

I have so many hobbies that time doesn’t allow me to fully pursue them all. Every day I work on the computer. I love the PSP program, and I am taking several lessons to learn more about the complex tools that it has. I am also learning Oracle 9i. I have made three presentations so far. I love music and easy listening. I write prose, poetry, and didactic writings.

I am sure there’s a lot of interesting topics and discussions happening on this forum and wanted to check it out.

      This is about it.

Hi all. My name is Andy, 38 years old – I live in Seattle.

I’m a "closet" biology lover. By that i mean, i never realized i had an interest in biology until i started studying it recently – it’s quite fascinating.

I’m planning to enroll in school to become a Licensed Massage Therapist, as such – I’ll be learning quite a bit about biology. In preparation for this, i’m self-studying on basic biology. In the *very* short time i’ve been studying, i find it quite interesting. I have ADD so I tend to have a bit of a challenge in learning so many small, detailed pieces of information – i can learn but it can take me a bit longer depending on the specific material.

I find the best way for me to learn is to explore as many different sources of information as possible – to be exposed to different explanations of the same concept. As such, I signed up on this board to help utilize another resource for learning.

Hope to meet everyone on the boards!!!
      ~Andy

      Hello everyone,

I’m a middle school student who will be going into 8th grade this fall. I was just researching on cells for an upcoming school project when I came across this forum! I am very much interested in biology – I plan to pursue a career related to medicine. However, I have not taken any biology courses in school yet, so for now I’m just trying to learn as much as I can on my own – please bear with me if I ever post questions that may have very obvious answers!

I can’t wait to start increasing my knowledge in biology! ๐Ÿ™‚

[*]Against the assault of laughter, nothing could stand.[*] Mark Twain

Wonderful site…wonderful way to help us all achieve…Just remember their some simple guidelines to Academic Success. For example, Academic Success is an oxymoron. The Real World is also an oxymoron. Go with your instincts, love yourself before all others. If you can truly learn to love yourself completely, you can learn to love everyone. Imagine if we all loved ourselves. What a different life we could live.

If you found what you truly love doing, stand up for yourself. And, always be willing to change your mind, if . be willing to change your mind. If it weren’t for other humans. all my knowledge would be useless.
I would like to propose something very simple. I propose that you always work, ethically. Don’t ignore the atrocities, that you witness. That is the balance at work, the least ethical you are, the more torment you will encounter.
Nature does not lie. Why do we have weather? To balance the sun’s unequal heating of the Earth. Of course, the worse the weather, The more unequal the heating of the earth. For answers look inside first, You will be surprised how much you know.
      Good Luck and Thank you,

In addition to all the above, I play the piano, am obsessed with Skillet music at the moment, like a bit of Taylor Swift when my mood needs a raise and have a rather old and decrepit dog named Sheba. Though I am a student I still live at home (because it’s cheaper, part time doesnt pay much) and my long-term boyfriend from overseas also bunks with us for a little rent.

I could tell you more, but I’m sure you don’t want my life story. So I’ll stop here ;D Nice to meet you all.

Hello everyone! I’m a student at Indiana University studying biology. I’m especially interested in evolution. I’m also somewhat of an amateur astronomer, and if you couldn’t tell by my name and signature I’m a huge Sagan fan. I thought this forum would be a good way to keep my mind on biology when I’m not studying and hopefully I’ll learn a little something as well.

      Ola,

Just so I have at least one post to my name.

Just started something that, in time, should result in a BSc in biology at the Open University. Just wanted to find a place where I can find/read and occasionally discuss things/subjects about biology, specifically evolution and bees…I am sucker for bees…honey actually…but they make it…so you got to like them a bit. (Even thinking of starting my own bee colony…for the honey. ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

Well who knows I will be able to contribute something close to worth while in the future…for now I will just lurk a bit around the forum. ๐Ÿ™‚

And now you may pat yourself on the back for making the through my first post. ๐Ÿ™‚

      Hey Guys! ๐Ÿ˜€

      Name: Lilly
      Nationality: German
      Gender: XX
      Age: 22
Education: Studying at the university. If everything works out fine, I’ll be a BSc. soon.
Interest: I must admit I cannot write sth really extraordinary in here, for I guess I’m a rather casual girl: I listen to a lot of music, I like mountainbiking (I’m however not half as sporty as I’d like to be ;)), just enjoy nice weather and being with people I love. In general I like discussions and trying a form a more or less substantiated opinion on things. I like to unterstand. Oh, and I like birds ๐Ÿ˜€

      Aaaand… since it’s fun, here’s a picture of the town where I study… http://www7.pic-upload.de/16.05.12/vbs758wwmpl4.jpg
I love spring and summer, when everything’s green!

Why I’m here? There are a couple of reasons.
Honestly I got a bit depressed and frustrated at the most online forums I’ve been involved in, for… many reasons. Losing somehow my belief in a basic intelligence of people when it comes to discussing things and opinions. Thatโ€™s not supposed to imply that I perceive myself as perfect (Iโ€™m far from that) but at least I try to be respectful and understand, which sometimes gets difficult, when itโ€™s not mutual.
And I’m tired of that. I’m tired of grown-ups acting like complete fools or just behaving like angry old bitter men to compensate.. whatever, I don’t know.

Well – when I read over most of the topics here, I got really attached to the.. well, climate here, the way people talk to each other, as if everyone knew that another human being is sitting at the other end. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong… but I hope not.

Maybe I can learn one thing or another, just increase my knowledge about all sort of biology things. And of course I hope I can improve my language a bit. So feel free to correct my language, grammar etc. whenever sth is wrong.

Hope that wasn’t too much for the beginning. Just guess it’s sort of nice to know who’s there.
Well, I hope for the best and prepare for the worst ๐Ÿ™‚
      Best regards,
      LittleBird

      My appreciation!
I perceive German as a rather difficult language to learn. Sometimes even I (as a native speaker) struggle to choose the appropriate expression (e.g. there are some terms containing either ‘mich’ or ‘mir’ and every now and then I hesitate in order to estimate which one of them is the correct one…) ๐Ÿ˜€

Even though I’m sure you’ll have plenty of German acquantainces… feel free to contact me if you have any questions at which I could be helpful.
