Hello folks, I have a trail camera set up in a wooded area near my home in Monmouth county, NJ. I am not a hunter, I just enjoy photographing and following the habits of wildlife. I captured a few photos of what I believed to be a coyote, however there are several people telling me it is a black wolf. I am hoping some of you experts would be able to shed some light on it for me. Thanks so much!!

It could be a melanistic coyote…

That looks too big for a coyote and being from Mercer County, NJ it would be awfully far south. I would suggest you call the local wildlife department or animal control and send them the pictures. It isn’t a wolf either because that would be very far south or on the run. My guess is its a lost dog. If it is a coyote that has ventured south, the wildlife department needs to know.

Thanks for the reply Daniel. I did email the state some photos and they say it’s a coyote. The lost dog did enter my mind as well, however it was chasing a buck that was in that spot a minute before those photos were taken. I’m just not sold on the coyote thing. I think, like you said it’s too big. And the head is larger than any coyote I’ve seen. I’m certainly no expert tho. Thanks again for the replies!!

Yeah, coyotes’ range is almost the entirety of N America. And how does one gauge the size with no real benchmarks in the photos?

It is a little bulky for a coyote. Stray/ feral dog is the best guess here.

It doesn’t have the raised mane of a coyote and the tail carriage seems a little too low. I would put my money on a feral dog.
