almost no sunlight penetrates into the deep ocean. however, many fish that live there attract prey and potential mates by producing thier own light. where does that light come from?

I really cant say I know the precise chemistry behind ‘Bioluminescence’ but here are two good places to start:

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bioluminescence
      and
      http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/units/basics/firefly/

Be careful you dont confuse all this with ‘biofluorescence’, as that is something very different…

      Hope that helps.

please note: wikipedia is a online databace that anyone can edit, the infomation is not always correct ( i often pride myself in correcting them), make sure to double check the infomation you find on wikipedia.

one of my teachers does not accept wikipedia in our biblograhpys for this reason

I was looking up something on Wikipedia (en) recently (I can’t quite remember what it was about though). The whole article was edited so that it contained swear words all the way through. Sometimes it isn’t that obvious though. When anyone can edit something, there will always be some people who will deliberately mess it up. All of my chemistry information from Wikipedia is correct (or at least backed up by at least one other source). But it’s always worth checking 😉
