mitochodria and chloroplast are thoght to be the evolutionary decendants of living cells that were engulfed by other cells. are mitochondria and chloroplasts alive? support your answer?

Although, by the Cell Theory, there’s only one "right" answer here, it seems like either side could be firmly supported. Kind of like the issues in deciding whether viruses are alive or not…
