Hi, I just have a really quick question: what is the origin of peroxisomes – is it from the ER or the Golgi? The reason that I am confused is because peroxisomes are very similar to lysosomes, but they are different organelles. I just need some clarification. Thanks

Lysosomes are built in the Golgi apparatus.. but peroxisomes, no..
Peroxisomes are self replicating organelles like mitochondria. They replicate by enlarging and then budding to produce new peroxisomes. Peroxisomes may also be formed directly…

if you want to know its origin or from where it evolved… the endosymbiotic origin of peroxisomes was previously proposed… juz like mitochondria as they are self-replicating organelles… but recent findings indicate peroxisomes are likely to originate or evolve from ER

Structurally, peroxisomes and lysosomes are quite different since peroxisomes have a crystalline core. I don’t think they are endosymbionts.

still an active research site. complicated mechanism of budding and formation. it’s still not known how a peroxisome knows when to split(maybe a recent discovery?!)
one of my main interests, but, unfortunately, not much to read about it.. - October 5, 2006 at 7:14 am #56006honeevKeymaster
