The air that is inhaled is about 20-percent oxygen, and the air that is exhaled is about 15-percent oxygen, so about 5-percent of the volume of air is consumed in each breath and converted to carbon dioxide. Therefore, a human being uses about 550 liters of pure oxygen (19 cubic feet) per day.

The average person takes about 28,800 breaths a day

How much oxygen does one breath contain that is used by the human body.

The volume of air that is inhaled varies between person and with the depth of each breath. Obviously some breaths inhale more air than others and inhalation can range between ~400ml to ~5L. The efficiency of respiration also reduces with age and is reduced in smokers.

Anyway, to give you an answer: if we worked with an average resting breath of around 350ml of air that reaches the lungs, and 20% of that is oxygen we have around 70ml of oxygen in each breath. 5% of that is used, so approximately 3.5ml of oxygen would be used per breath.

On average a human body produces around 1kg of CO2 a day.

The average adult at rest inhales and exhales something like 7 or 8 liters (about one-fourth of a cubic foot) of air per minute. That totals something like 11,000 liters of air (388 cubic feet) in a day.

Even though I love science and have a degree in it, I had absolutely no idea about this. It really blows my mind to know the fact in metrics

We need oxygen to breath.
