Budding yeast cell preferentially repair double stranded breaks by homologous recombination. Yeast can exist ina diploid or haploid state. Cells in the haploid state are especially sensitive to agents that cause double stranded breaks in DNA. If the break occurs in the G1 phase of the cell cycle, most of the yeast cells die, however, if the breaks occur in the G2 phase of the cell cycle, a much higher fraction of the cells survive. Why is this?

What comes between G1 and G2? The S phase.

If they preferentially repair by homologous combination, after the S phase (and its DNA replication) they have the material with which to carry out this process.

what are the checkpoint control factors a dividing cell checks before going into the M-phase? (search in a molecular cell biology book)
