hello….. want to ask a question
anybody can give your opinion why our medium become acidic when we culture animal cell in that medium. it that related to the activity of the cell……. or can u suggest any website can i find it?. already try, but does not help me much - September 27, 2006 at 1:42 pm #55470baikuzaParticipant
maybe because the cells excrete its metabolic waste… hm.. i do not ever do cell culture but, i guess it is urea…hm.. maybe i’m ush it too much.. i do not know what cell it is and the medium after all.. i only guess it.

well, a cell makes atp by cellular respiration. cellular respiration makes CO2 and H2O, which associate in the medium to make H2CO3.
and of course, as an alternative, the cell can make lactic acid by fermentation(guess what, lactic acid is acidic) or ethanol. ethanol is not acidic by itslef, but some bacteria can grow on the medium that turn it into acetic acid(big surprise, also acidic) - September 28, 2006 at 2:34 am #55518chemistry_freakoParticipant
Yeah – as what MrMistery’s said – due to their products as they metabolise the some of the components in the media, and the carbon dioxide they produce as one of the end products makes the medium acidic (as they dissolve to form carbonic acid).
