Hi i wanted to know why its so important for bacteria to have a phosphate source? i mean what would happen if they didn’t have one? could’nt they use any other alternatives?

Because they cannot do transmutation of atoms 😉
There might be bacteria able to work from elemntal phosphorus, but most of them need the phosphate to grow.
