Hi! I have a small problem and I wonder if anybody on this forum could help me.
I’m from Romania. My parents have started building a house in the country side about 2 month ago. 3 days ago some black worms have started invading the small cottage where they live until the house itself is ready. The cottage is made of bricks and cement. The worms are black, about 4-5 cm long and 0.4-0.5 cm diameter. They climb up the outer walls of the house go up in the attic and come down on the inside walls only at night time. (the cottage is not quite finished yet therefor not completly isolated from the outside). If you cut one worm in half, the other half keeps walking.
Does anybody know what are they, where do they come from and how can we get rid of them? I could post a picture if this would be a lot of help for identifying them. I don’t have a picture right now as I don’t live there and my parents refuse to learn how to use a digital cam 🙄 but I suppose I could go there myself one night and take some pictures…although that’s the last thing in the world I wanna do - October 2, 2006 at 1:33 pm #55850BeetleParticipant
Photos would help a lot. I know that worms dont have legs but does these have them. Maybe they are not worms but some kind of diplopods. It is little strange that worms go all the way up the wall on exposed surface. I know that in our region there are some diplopods that apear in high numbers in the spring. Maybe its something like that. Especialy if weather conditions are starnge for this part of year. Also check if those cratures are on grass and trees around hous or only in your house. And write something more about their morphology, like are they hard or soft, moist or dry, smellling strange…

this is a picture of one of the worms
They haven’t been noticed on trees or grass and they only come out at night. One of the neighbours also has them only in the room above her cellar. The cottage where my parents live and where the worms appeared is also above a big cellar. They seem to be atracted by moist and humidity.
Wheather is indeed pretty warm for this time of year. - October 4, 2006 at 3:11 pm #55968Laura_tParticipant

Yes, it`s definitly is not worm. It`s diplopod. I would gess that they have second generation this year because of late warm wather or it`s just second peak of their activity. I dont know much about them so here is the link if you want some info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millipede . You could try to get some examples to local biologist.

Hmmmm, I honestly think you can`t. You could maybe try to put some repelents that are used for insects but don`t know if that will work. Since that they have emerged in such wast numbers I think you cannot stop it or prevent it in any way. You can always kill them (last option). Since they are not indangering you in any way I would suggest you to do nothing cause the effort invested to eradicate them will be way to much in terms of succes and I believe their apperiance wont last for long, especialy not in autumn, though there is possibility that they will appear again in spring. 🙂

GET OUT OF YOUR HOUSE FAST! I had things like this in my attic for about a year and they ate away at my legs ,turning them black. One of my worms was sick so i brought her to the vet. While I was there I decided to see what these worms really were and the worm doctor told me they were short, black haired and from Curaheen in Cork and go by the name of someone .My first worm has now grown into about 5 foot and comes Gatten down dunnes with da boiz. I like worm and get rid of your worm . take my advice .
