Hello. My name is Jessica and I’m a sophomore in high school. I’m currently working on a Biology worksheet and I am so lost and had no where else to turn. I need a bit of assistance with the answering of one questions.

“Suggest one or two simple experiments to determine whether a solid white substance is a lipid or a carbohydrate. What evidence would you need to support each hypothesis? ”

If anyone could assist me with answering this question it would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I do have an online book, but it’s not nearly as helpful as the actual textbook and alot less weight in my backpack, so I left it at school.

You could try dissolving it in water? If it dissolves I’d figure it’d be a carb, if it doesn’t, a lipid?

cellulose wouldn’t dissolve even though it’s a carb(well very slowly anyway). Have you tried researching hydrophillic and hydrophobic substances?

I think carbohydrates are water soluble and lipids are not. This may help you in designing a experiment.

      when i’m on high school
we test it’s lipid/ fat(acctually) by put it on a paper then look at it. if the paper become transparent after the drying process, keep it under the sun till H2O- if it available on the object, the paper may says to u that it is kind of lipid/ fat.

if u not found it on the paper may be it is not lipid/fat.

      quite simple? 😉

carbs….lipids…test ..simple…u can always use the common test for lipids which is sudan3 test givin u a bright red oil layer when it settles….thats for lipids…

for carbs..use the common onces…like bennedict for reducin sugars or iodine…test for..starch…etc…

how about a little bit complicated things?? try to put these igredients to the specimen..if it’s lipid, then these igredients will solved. they’re Retinol, calciopherol, and tocopherol… 😆
