As we know we have 46 chromosomes in our cells, but it written in books that these chromosomes are paired means there are 23 pairs of chromosome, then what is criteria of making pairs, are the pairs made according to the function of chromosomes or Size. For example In a pair of chromosomes both of the chromosomes have similar size and function ?
In a pair of chromosomes they have basically the same size and function. They are, what we call homologous, that is, they contain the same set of genes and other DNA, althrough the real sequence can differ (see alleles), so the exact size and function can differ a little (e. g. gene on one chromosome can have deletion -> different size or the gene can code for non-functioning product -> different function), but basically, they are still "the same" (homologous)
