A mutation in a gene can sometimes result in uncontrollable cell division. This is a feature characteristic of most cancerous cells. What organelle would be important is controlling this function?

      I can’t find the answer anywhere! 😳

      Thanks!

Well lysosomes would "regulate" any cancerous cells by releasing digestive enzymes to cause apoptosis in the tumorous cell, but specifically speaking, it’s the p53 gene’s control that determines whether or not a cell is uncontrollably dividing.

You can say that the nucleus itself is a "first barrier" to cancer and the lysosomal reaction is a "second barrier". If these two fail (obviously there are more mechanisms but these two are the most significant) then you’ve got yourself a tumor.

A mutation in the TP53 gene is one of the most common mutations found with cancers, and it has been linked to an increased risk for developing breast, prostate, and lung cancers as well as Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
