      Hi,

we recently did a lab where we stained the potato cell with iodine. For some reason, we observed more sacs in the cell after staining…just wondering if this is normal and if the “sacs” we sall might actually be just bubbles(didn’t look like bubbles though).

      -Thanks in advance

iodine is the indicator of starch. and starch is a compound found in potato (actually in most of the plant cells).

I did that experiment! Well I think it was that experiment…for some reason I couldn’t find any sacs at all!

Besides being an indicator of starch, iodine also acts as a stain and helps us to see certain features in more detail. However, ive never seen any “sacs” before. Could you post a photo?

      Thanks for replies.

After doing some research, I found that I was looking at amyloplasts. It basically looked like this (but darker, I put too much iodine 🙁 )

The only thing that i don’t understand is why i saw more amyloplasts that are smaller after dropping iodine on the slide. (originally in tap water)

      please help

      -thanx

i guess the iodine stains it, making it more visible. I doubt any reactions took place to make more amyloplasts.

hey,, water potential = solute potential +pressure potential
is ok,, but from where jelly babies r coming……

I’m guessing that they are harder to stain and you only see them at a higher concentration of iodine. just an opinion

thanks everyone for all your replies, I guess I’ll just go with the theory that iodine made it more visible.

if any1 has anymore suggestions, i would greatly appreciate it

Iodine is a stain specific for starch, meaning when it comes in contact with starch containing substances, it changes colors.
