I’m kind of confused with this question:
When a jellyfish is removed from its saltwater environment and put into fresh water it swells and bursts. Do you think a jellyfish is a plant or an animal? Why? [Hint: think about how plant cells and animal cells react when placed in a solution.]
Help?

It’s an animal, part of the phylum cnideria.

The hint talks about cells being hypertonic or hypotonic to their solutions. But think about this: Animal cells have cell membranes, plant cells have cell walls… what do you know about those?

i hv a question.
would the entire jellyfish burst or just the cells in it?
will the same thing happen to human if we were put in a solution hypotonic enough since we also have no cell wall? - May 1, 2006 at 5:28 pm #47710PoisonParticipant
Your cells can burst if they are put in hypotonic solution.
You do not burst but you gain water in fresh water. Think about people killed and thrown in rivers. They get lots of water and become very heavy.PS: No need to "think" about jellyfish, it is an animal. 🙂

Your epidermis is pretty tough, and resistant to hyper-osmosis. However, if one was to inject pure H20 into your bloodstream, it would cause your erythrocytes to burst. Furthermore (I think this has been discussed on this forum) if you were to drink an ungodly amount of water, it could do damage to your internal orgrans (though epithelial tissue is resistant to that in general)

how about the jellyfish? 🙄

the cells of the jellyfish would burst..

thank you for clarifying..
so, there wont be any dramatic scene here - May 3, 2006 at 5:16 pm #47811MrMisteryParticipant
only the death of the animal 😀

some of our cells do burst if the water potential is strange in the blood, for instance if the plasma has a pO2 of -20 and a red blood cell has -10 then the water will leave the cell and it will shrivel as it travels along the concentration gradient
also if the pO2 was reversed i.e. cell -20 and plasma -10 then water will be taken up by the cell and it would burstalthough generally the the blood is about the same water potential inside and outside of the cells to prevent such things from happening, so make sure no one puts H2o in ur blood and u’ll pretty much be fine
as for the jellyfish no thought is needed as its definately a animal, it does everything an animal does, most of all it moves and hve u ever seen a plant move? other than from wind and fungus flytraps no
sry if i blabbered on abit lol

i think jellyfish are gay
- May 8, 2006 at 3:01 pm #48076PoisonParticipant
Gay? Why did you say that? And what’s the relation between your post and the subject?
- May 11, 2006 at 10:10 pm #48260red_roseParticipant
of course jelly fish are animals. do you really think that scientists have gotten that wrong all this time and that they really are plants. i doubt really doubt that

i agree. support the gay jellyfish association!

Jellyfishes are animals, but they can have a simbiotic relationship with different kinds of algaes.

now what PossiblE use could that reply have had.
p.s. maybe the jellyfish think that YOU are

Could you please tell me exactly WHY the jellyfish burst?

The answer is already on the first page 8)

This made me giggle a little bit.. I just finished a exam with the question of whether a jellyfish is a plant or animal, and why it would burst in fresh water…
And yes, jellyfish are homosexual beasts. - July 30, 2007 at 6:52 am #74859kashi1134Participant
But -WHY- are jellyfish an animal?
And why do they burst in fresh water? - July 30, 2007 at 1:25 pm #74868DarbyParticipant
How much do you understand about osmosis? That will lead to the second answer.
Jellyfish don’t photosynthesize, don’t have cell walls, and digest food internally – that’s enough to differentiate them from the other multicellular groups, the plants and the fungi.

That’s great, well done! Big clap for you! 😐
Maybe a biology forum isn’t the best place for you. Just a thought.

And maybe you should find another forum too.
