Mucosal Wound

Hi,

Could someone pls define what a mucosal wound exactly is…say I cut myself with a knife (whilst trying to chop something) is that a mucosal wound? or If i trip over whilst running and you know that scrap on the knee that occurs is that a mucosal wound? Is it just basically a cut to the skin?

Mucosal wound is something that is on a mucous membrane. These line e.g. intestinal tract, respiratory tract and female genitalia – generally surfaces that are "inside" the body, but still exposed to the outside world in a way or another. A cut to the finger or a knee is an epidermal or dermal wound depending on the depth of the cut. A deep cut can be subcutaneous (hypodermal) wound.

Hi,

Thanks..so how do mucosal wounds occur? The one I’m reading about was purposely done for an exp. but just wondering if a the muscous membrane is generally inside what is a somewhat everyday occurance that could result in such a wound?

Picking your nose can result in that, as well as an sty pretzel.
Ingestion of hard objects can result in severe damages of the mucosal surface in nasty places. And it is laso probably involved in AIDS transmission among male homosexual as well as others. I let you figure out the details.

Mucosal membranes are membranes (generally consisting of epithelium) that are used in fluid transfer (ie, secretion or absorption). Think intestines (large and small), genital areas, eye sockets, the mouth, and so on. Wherever it’s wet, that is more likely than not some sort of mucosal membrane.

Thanks for that guys/girls..how common are these wounds though? I mean it’s not like people pick their nose so excessively that they incur wounds all the time..or ppl ingest something sharp on purpose..so that would mean that if a mucosal wound was to occur it would be rare? Something entering your eye, getting stabbed (right through intestines?) or something going through your mouth is an unlikely event..do you guys get what I mean?..

A mucosal wound is just as likely to occur as any other wound.. depending on your lifestyle or the particular situation you’re in. The location of mucosal membranes would obviously make it a little bit harder to damage.
