ParticipantIt is hard to describe without sending a photo. Insect is blue with orange spots (almost) around its edges, it has 6 legs I think that appear to be at the extreme end of its body which is almost shield shaped with what appears to be a large Proboscis or stinger.
This thing was found in Penrose, Auckland, New Zealand but I cannot identify it anywhere on the internet and no one can tell me what it is, in all honesty it looks like something out of a bad sci fi movie.

ParticipantIt’s hard to tell unless you look very closely, but it is actually some type of butterfly or moth (pretty sure it’s a moth). It looks like you caught it just after it emerged from its cocoon, so its wings are not fully expanded yet. I’m not sure exactly which species, but it looks like it belongs to the Tiger Moth family. We have moths like this in North America with the same iridescent blue and orange coloration.
